How to avoid scams in Esthetic medicine?

Hyaluronic acids ordered on the internet, unusual payment and prices, disfigured patients, swollen mouths, necrotic noses and burnt skin... Women often think twice before undergoing surgery to beautify themselves and non-invasive, outpatient aesthetic medicine procedures have become commonplace. But the excessive democratization with too attractive prices leads to abuses!

Checklist to avoid scams in esthetic medicine

 1. Trust. You can look elsewhere and compare, it is not a problem.

 2. Checkability. Check the identity of the doctor on the INAMI website ("Search for a health care provider") because otherwise you have no recourse in case of a scam. Visit www.inami.be

 3. Respect. Ask to speak to the doctor in person, not a secretary. The patient deserves a few minutes with the doctor.

 4. Transparency. Does the doctor call you back with a hidden number?

 5. Professionnalism. Is your doctor a member of the SBME (Belgian Society of Esthetic Medicine)? Visit www.sbmebveg.be

 6. Quality. What is the brand of the products used for the care? Demand the best.

 7. Support and continuity. What is the post-treatment follow-up, the after-sales service? Make sure that you can easily contact the doctor again in case of a problem.

 8. Importance of anatomical knowledge. Only doctors who specialize in aesthetic medicine have sufficient knowledge of the anatomy of the body and especially the face. This gives them the advantage of performing injections in a safe and secure manner without putting their patients at risk.

Influenced by the new beauty canons popularised by social networks, young women, some of whom are minors, are resorting to fillers, injectable and resorbable products designed to plump up the lips or fill in early wrinkles.

Influenced by these networks, many of them ignore the legislation and ethics which state that only a qualified doctor is authorised to carry out this type of operation.

They opt for the cheap services of self-proclaimed experts, hairdressers or beauticians who perform injections illegally and in ignorance.

« We receive photos of patients with infections. Young women need to be made aware of the importance of using qualified professionals »

These are generally rather young patients who frequent this kind of institute for budget reasons, whereas the fees of these illegal injectors are only slightly lower than those of a real doctor.

If BOTOX® is a drug that is sold through the medical circuit, Hyaluronic acid can be found on consumer e-commerce sites...

« I receive more and more patients who want to repair the catastrophic results caused by these illegal injections: asymmetries, lumps under the skin... This is becoming worrying. »
